August 7-A Kingdom at War

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 14.49-52 “All the days Saul there was bitter war”

Focus Verse-1 Samuel 14.52

All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took him into his service.

Insight– True to God’s word, Saul took the young men of Israel and sent them to war.  It is interesting that as dysfunctional as Saul was, God still used him to deliver Israel from their oppressors, thus preparing them for what would be next.  Unfortunately, perhaps due to the people of Israel desiring more to put their trust in an earthly king than a Heavenly King, it came at a great cost.

One thing to think about is that perhaps these battles were something that God used to prepare His people to be able to focus on some deeper spiritual issues.  Just a thought.

Active Response-I need to remember that God can use whoever He wants, whenever He wants.  I want to lead people into battles that are worth fighting and battles that will build them up and preserve them rather than battles that will destroy them.  I don’t want to be one whose name is associated with bitter wars, but with grace, peace and love as God has won the victories.

God of the Angel Armies, lead me into Your battles and lead me to fight them in Your ways.  All the while in complete reliance on You.  Amen.
