August 9-Follow the Leader

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 15.1-35 “to obey is better than sacrifice”

Focus Verse-1 Samuel 15.22

But Samuel replied:
“Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the LORD?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

Insight-Saul’s biggest problem was his leadership issues.  First of all, he was a poor leader.  Saul, time after time, is more interested in trying to preserve his image to be able to lead well.  Saul is trying to lead people that he is afraid of.  So this causes Saul to make bad decision after bad decision.

Saul was probably a poor leader because he was such a poor follower.  The thing that God and Samuel keep pointing out about Saul is that he doesn’t obey God.  When we think of obedience, we often think of it as following rules so we don’t get into trouble, etc.  Obedience is actually defined as “following guidance.”  Saul’s problem was that he had a difficult time following God’s leadership.  This is what sin really is.  It’s not merely messing up or breaking the rules; sin is rejecting God’s leadership in our lives and this is not only Saul’s issue, but ours as well.

Active Response-I want to follow God’s leadership in all of my life.  It is so easy to reject His leadership and to think, like Saul, that I know better or that I can do better than God can.  I need to surrender all of me to God and His leadership.

All Powerful God, I surrender my all to You.  I want to let You be the Leader of all of my life.  Give me the grace to trust Your leadership in all areas of my life.  Amen.
