August 6-What did You Say?

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 14.24-48 “not a hair of his head will fall to the ground”

Focus Verse-1 Samuel 14.29-30

Jonathan said, “My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?”

Insight-What a mess Saul has made of things.  In his zeal to pursue the Philistines and to motivate his troops, he didn’t care for their needs.  Instead, he makes an oath that puts his troops in a tough spot and his son in a tougher spot.  Not only that, but when the soldiers can finally eat, they are careless and eat the meat improperly.

To top it all off, when Saul finds out what Jonathan has done, he in order to preserve his sense of power and reputation, intends to go through with killing Jonathan.  Fortunately, the soldiers recognize Jonathan as a hero and they save his life.

Active Response-In a position of leadership, I want to make sure that I don’t put my reputation before the well-being of those that are leading me.  I want to lead with compassion and more confidence in God than myself.

God, lead me and direct me.  Fill my heart with confidence and compassion and help me to lead in grace and truth as a good and loving shepherd-just like You.  Amen.
