August 4-Into our Hands

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 13.23-14.14 “the LORD has given them into our hands”

Focus Verse– 1 Samuel 14.12

The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come up to us and we’ll teach you a lesson.”
So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Climb up after me; the LORD has given them into the hand of Israel.”

Insight-We can observe a couple of things about Jonathan in this passage.  First of all, he is a man of action.  Rather than sitting back and seeing what happens, he decides to go over to scout out the Philistine camp.  Then, rather than just taking a look, Jonathan decides to see if he can pick a fight with them.

Second of all, Jonathan seems to have his confidence placed in God more than anything else.  It’s not a question of whether he can handle them, it is a question of whether or not God will give them into the hand of Israel.  And in this case, God does deliver the Philistines into the hands of Israel and God uses Jonathan to strengthen the hearts of the Israelites.

Active Response-I want to become more and more a man of action.  I want to be the kind of person who consistently seeks out what God is doing and wants to do and responds quickly to it, with confidence that God will do what He wants, so all I have to do is join in with what He is doing.

God of Power, You are the God above all, lead me to follow You immediately and passionately in all that You are doing.  Amen.
