July 26-Rejecting the King

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 8.1-22 “they have rejected me as their king”

Focus Verse-1 Samuel 8.7

And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.

Insight-There are a couple of things that grab my attention from this passage.  First, God’s people have rejected His leadership.  They no longer want to be lead by God, they want to be lead by a human king.  Secondly, they want to be like everyone else.  They had lost sight of the fact that God had called them to be set apart, different from everyone else.

Apparently, God’s response is to let the people have what they want.  God in His wisdom, seems to be quite content and comfortable with allowing us to experience the consequences of rejecting His leadership.  In this case, he even warns them as to what this would look like, yet he is willing to do this to lead people into learning that He is the Leader that can be trusted.

Active Response-I don’t want to be like everyone else.  I want to be like God wants me to be.  I want to learn to follow His leadership in everything.  I want to come to the place where I am not content to be “like everyone else.”  I want to become more and more aware of the consequences of such actions.

Father God, You alone are the Leader I can trust.  Give me the wisdom to follow Your leadership in all things.  Amen.
