July 25-Rid Yourselves

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 7.2-17 “commit yourselves to the LORD and serve him only”

Focus Verse-1 Samuel 7.3

So Samuel said to the whole house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths and commit yourselves to the LORD and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.”

Insight-It’s funny how difficult it is for us to understand repentance.  This is what Samuel is trying to lead the Israelites into.  They had run into a life of chaos because they had chosen to reject God’s leadership and do things their own way, actually following the leadership of idols and other false gods.  We do it too, you know.  We exchange the leadership of God in our lives for lesser things, things that seem “safer”, or at least, things that we think we can control.

God demands that we follow his leadership completely, because he knows that’s the only way life will truly work for us.  It’s time to surrender and to acknowledge what Samuel and the people finally acknowledged-“Thus far has the LORD helped us”, even in their rebellion, they recognized that God had been there for them the entire time, loving them and drawing them back to him.

Active Response-I want to live my life surrendered to God.  I want God to show me where I have followed idols and other false gods, and I want the courage to let go of them.  I want to live my life enjoying his loving leadership.

God, I surrender my false gods and idols to you.  You are my true, loving leader and I want to follow You and You alone.  Amen.
