July 22-The Glory has Departed

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 4.12-22 “The glory has departed from Israel”

Focus Verse-1 Samuel 4.22

She said, “The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”

Insight-When things don’t go the way we want, it is so easy to assume that it is a result of God’s absence or God’s refusal to do what we thought He should.  The Israelites were still struggling with thinking that God was their servant, to do whatever they wanted Him to do.  They thought God’s job was to give them life on their terms.  Perhaps they wanted to make their own plans and ask God to bless them rather than letting God make the plans that are already blessed.

So, what happens here, is a struggle to take responsibility for their own actions and false belief systems.  They weren’t trusting God and seeking His direction, they were trusting the ark and expecting God to work the way they wanted Him to act.

Active Response-I want to learn to live with Samuel’s attitude of being God’s servant, rather than Israel’s attitude of God being their servant.  I don’t want to live wondering if God is going to bless my plans, attitudes and actions.  I want to follow His plans, have the attitude of Christ and I want to live like Jesus would if Jesus were living my life.  I already know that those are the things that God blesses.

Holy God, help me to follow You and Your leadership more and more closely every day.  Teach me to trust You in everything and to look to You for my direction.  Amen.
