July 21-What Happened?

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 4.1-11 “Nothing like this has happened before”

Focus Verse– 1 Samuel 4.8-9

“Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!””

Insight-It’s a scary thing when people who are outside of a relationship with God actually take Him more seriously that those that claim to be His people do.  As Israel goes to battle, things aren’t going well, so they decide they need a “good luck charm”-the Ark of the Covenant.  Apparently, they believed that God’s presence was confined to the ark and that God’s will was shaped by their own will.  Unfortunately, they learned a tough lesson.  God is not confined to our boxes.  God is not conformed to our wills.

Did you notice what didn’t happen?  No one seemed to inquire of God what they should do.  No one asked God for help.  The ark became an idol and their foolish pride brought about their demise.  The Philistines recognized who God was, but the Israelites didn’t.

Active Response-I want to depend on God, not on formulas or my plans for how God should work.  I want to have an increasingly more accurate picture of who God is.  I want to give God the freedom to do what He wants in my life and spend less time trying to get Him to do what I want.  I want to be transformed according to His desires and His pleasure.  I need to surrender.

Holy God, to live intimately dependent on You, following Your guidance and resting in Your omni-presence.  I give You the freedom to perform Your will in my life.  Amen.
