July 23-Fallen Idols
1 Samuel 5.1-12 “There was Dagon, fallen on his face”
Focus Verses-1 Samuel 5.4
“When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.”
Insight-So, while the people of Israel had lost sight of who God was and how He works, the Philistines were about to get a crash course. The Philistines took the ark of God and put it in the temple of Dagon and set the ark at it’s feet. In this time, battles weren’t simply about which army was stronger, it was about whose God was more powerful. Thus, the Philistines believed that their god, Dagon, was more powerful because they had defeated the Israelites. Of course, the God of Israel, has the last word.
Imagine the surprise when God turns the tables and the Philistine priests show up to discover that their fish-god-of-stone was face down in front of the representation of the God of Israel. The priests quietly put things back the way they had set it up and the next day, same thing, but now the God of Israel has completely humiliated their god by blowing off it’s head and arms. To make matters worse for the Philistines, not only does God humiliate their god in their secret places, but He humiliates the people in their “secret places.” Our bibles translate it tamely as “tumors”, but the what we are really talking about here is “tumors in the groin” or hemorrhoids! Is nothing sacred! When God wants to make a point, He makes a point!
Active Response-I want to keep trusting that even if God doesn’t operate the way that I think He should in the timing that I think He should, that God always has the last word. God won’t allow His glory to be stolen. I want to recognize God for who He really is and let Him do what He wants, how he wants.
Father God, thank you for the truth that You are never confused, never defeated, and never humiliated. Help me to trust Your power and Your plans. Amen.
