August 12-As Directed

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 17.1-58 “as Jesse had directed”

Focus Verse-1 Samuel 17.20

Early in the morning David left the flock in the care of a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry.

Insight-The story of David and Goliath is one that we are all familiar with, but the thing that catches my attention is that the reason that this story even happened was that David simply obeyed his dad.  Because David was willing to obey his dad, he was in a position to do something bigger than he could have ever imagined.  I think this is significant because so often we want to do “big” things for God, but maybe we are so focused on trying to find and do those big things that we ignore the simple things.  This keeps us from being in a place where we are ready to follow God’s guidance in all of life.

Obedience is defined as following guidance.  Jesus said that he is looking for people who can be trusted to follow him in the little things and that he will entrust them with the bigger things.  Saul’s problem was that he couldn’t follow guidance and it starts with the little things.

Active Response-I need to make sure that I can follow the guidance of God and the people who God puts in leadership positions in my life.  I want to lead well and to be able to lead well I need to learn to follow well.

God in heaven, help me to learn to trust You leadership more and more so that I can freely obey in the little things and watch You do the big things.  Amen.
