August 10-The Heart

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 16.1-13 “the LORD looks at the heart”

Focus Verse-1 Samuel 16.7

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things human beings look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

Insight-Apparently, the biggest difference between Saul and David was their hearts.  Saul had a heart that was more concerned with pursuing his own interests, while David’s was committed to following God’s leadership.  God reminds Samuel that it is so easy to attribute a person’s value and potential by what we see on the outside, while a person’s true value and potential are hidden in who they really are on the inside.  When we entrust ourselves to God, He brings the true potential, etc. out.

Active Response-I want to learn to see people through God’s eyes.  I want to see who they really are and who God believes that they can be.  At the same time, I want to develop a heart that is fixed on following God’s leadership.  I need to keep setting myself and my personal agendas aside for One greater.

God, transform my heart to be a heart like Yours, that loves like You do.  Amen.
