July 16-Growing Up

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 2.12-26 “Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD”

Focus Verse-1 Samuel 2.26

“And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with people.”

Insight-There is an interesting parrallel going on here.  On the one hand, you have Eli’s sons-born into the ministry.  Their focus is on serving themselves rather than serving God and the people.  They exploit the people’s sacrifices and they exploit the women who serve at the entrance of the tent of meeting.  All the while, Eli, the High Priest, seems to have no influence or control over his sons.

Meanwhile, Samuel, a small child, spends all of his time ministering before the LORD.  Apparently, Samuel is surrounded by negative influences, even in the priesthood, yet he continues to fulfill the vow that his mother made before he was born.  He is described as growing in stature and favor with God and the people he was serving.  This is a picture of serving with integrity and grace in a way that people saw something in him that was right and admirable.

Active Response-Who am I serving?  Myself or God and others?  I will seek to serve to honor God and others and to seek God’s pleasures over my own.  Letting God grow himself in me as I serve him.

Father God, direct my focus and my efforts toward serving You and others.  Help me to set myself aside and to let you grow me into You.  Amen.
