July 9-Fully Armored

Journey through Ephesians

Ephesians 6.13-18 “put on the full armor of God”

Focus Verse-Ephesians 6.13

“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”

Insight-So how do we stand?  Paul tells us to arm ourselves with the armor that God has given us-these aren’t things that we have produced, these are things that God produces for us.  These are the weapons that allow us to stand firm.  We are already victorious in Christ all that is left is standing firm in that victory as Satan tries to trash the party.

So first we are instructed to put on the belt of truth.  The belt was the first part of the armor that was put on.  It holds everything together and much of the rest of the armor hangs on it.  Paul says that what surrounds us and holds us together is truth.  As we embrace the truth of who God is and what He is doing, we are able to move freely with integrity and faithfulness.  Next is the breastplate of righteousness.  This righteousness is the sanctifying work that God does in us to transform the way we live into right living, which like a breastplate, protects our hearts.  The next piece is the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace, Paul describes these as our footwear.  This deals with firm footing and surefootedness that comes from knowing you are experiencing shalom-a sense that ultimately, everything is as it should be.  The shield of faith comes next, this is our trust that God is who He says He is and does what He says He will do.  Our trust in God is what protects us as Satan tries to deceive us with his lies that tear us apart.  Protecting our minds is our hope of salvation.  The confident expectation that we are rescued and will be ultimately rescued by Jesus, our conquering hero.  Lastly, we take up the sword of the Spirit, the word of God.  God’s word cuts through the fog and the deceit.  Finally, he says, pray all the time.  The battle isn’t about what we can do, it’s still about God and His victory-we get to share in it, He already did all the work.  Prayer is intimate dependence on God.  So really, the battle is all about trusting God with humility.

God has given us everything we need to not be destroyed and actually to experience His victory.   We can’t try to do it alone or with our own weapons.

Active Response-I need to rely more and more on God and who He is.  He is the standard of truth and is our only hope.  I will seek to rest in His truth and power.

Father God, thank you for fighting for me and equipping me to stand firm as Satan tries to destroy me.  Give me the strength to stand firm with my focus completely on You.  Amen.
