July 7-Wholeheartedly

Journey through Ephesians

Ephesians 6.5-9 “Serve wholeheartedly . . .”

Focus Verse-Ephesians 6.7

“Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people,”

Insight-Why are you working at your current job?  It is so easy to get locked into doing a job just because you need the money or something like that.  What does that say about your worldview?  Apparently the focus is the paycheck and we will do whatever we have to do to get it.  Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of us who are working in a job where we are thinking that this is not what I want to do for the rest of my life.  As followers of Jesus, we need to remember that regardless of what we do, we are not defined by what we do, but who we do it for.  We are defined by Christ, and as we enter into Jesus’ way of life, everything we do is a response to the grace of God that is all around us-even in that job we might not particularly be excited about.

Maybe it’s about realizing that we are not served by the job nor do we serve the job-we serve someone bigger-Jesus Christ and in the job or any situation he leads us into, we are actually about the incredible, restorative work of joining him in establishing his Kingdom here on earth.  The affect of sin in this world is destruction and division, while our God is a Creator who invites us to create along with Him.  Creation is all about putting things together.  So whether my job calls me to create or to serve I am joining God in His work.  Why wouldn’t we want to do that wholeheartedly?

Active Response-I will ask God to give me a bigger perspective in everything that I do and I will seek to let Jesus be the master of every area of my life, especially the work that he has called me to do.  I will strive to join Jesus in his restorative Kingdom work, which is cleverly disquised as my job.

God, open my heart to serve you and others as You serve me, even though I don’t deserve it-wholeheartedly.  Amen.
