August 20-You Will be King

Journey through 1 Samuel

1 Samuel 23.7-29 “You will be king over Israel”

Focus Verse-1 Samuel 23.17

“Don’t be afraid,” he said. “My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this.”

Insight-You try to imagine what must be going through Jonathan’s mind.  He has always been faithful to God, he has led the people better than his father, heir to the throne, etc.  He probably could have been a great king.  But because of his father’s sins, he understands that God will give the throne to David.  Jonathan had every reason to be jealous of David and to oppose him in any and every way, but instead, he remains loyal to David, his friend.

Instead of entertaining the jealousy, he chooses to support David.  You get the sense that it is because he is willing to trust that God knows what He is doing and even if it isn’t according to Jonathan’s plans, it will be okay.

Active Response-It is hard when you feel usurped.  Everything within us wants to fight back.  I want to be able to trust God so wholeheartedly that I can really rejoice with those who are rejoicing, even if it feels like it may be, at that time, at my expense.  I want to be the type of person who lovingly carries those around me because I know that God is carrying me.

Loving God, thank You for holding me and my world in Your hands.  Help me to learn from You as You carry me so that I can be used by You to carry others.  Amen.
